SMILE MAKE OVER

Smile makeover

Smile makeover is the process of improving the appearance of the smile through one or more cosmetic dentistry procedures, such as:

Smile Makeover: reinvent your smile

Our motto "every smile is a signature" means that when creating your new smile, we take into consideration your facial appearance, skin tone, hair color, teeth (color, width, length, shape and display of teeth), gum tissue and lips. Smile makeovers are performed for many reasons and customized to your unique considerations.

What do you like or dislike about your smile or your teeth?

Some aspects of your smile that your cosmetic dentist will examine with you and that could be improved are the following:

TOOTH COLOR

Silver or amalgam dental fillings can be replaced by natural tooth-colored composite restorations, while tooth whitening can improve the color of stained or dull teeth.

The color and shade of the original teeth are important considerations when evaluating and preparing for various procedures, including porcelain veneers, crowns, bridges, composite bonding and dental implants.

When considering the color of your teeth, keep in mind that dark or discolored teeth can suggest an aged mouth. A well-formed smile with bright white teeth gives a youthful appearance.

The shade your dentist chooses for teeth whitening and veneers is carefully evaluated with particular attention paid to the tone and color of your face and hair. Cosmetic dentists are accustomed to finding the right balance between providing you with a brighter, whiter smile and maintaining a natural tooth color.

ALIGNMENT AND SPACING

Teeth that are crooked, overlapping or have gaps between them can be straightened and aligned if necessary by orthodontics or Invisalign and enhanced with veneers.

MISSING TEETH

One or more missing teeth can negatively affect the appearance of your smile - as well as affecting your bite and increasing your risk of tooth decay - making replacement an integral part of oral health and facial aesthetics. Missing teeth can be replaced with dental implants, bridges or partial dentures.

HARMONY AND BALANCE

Uneven, chipped and cracked teeth can be cosmetically bonded for an improved appearance, and a gummy smile can be reshaped to help improve the overall appearance of the smile.

A cosmetic dentist will work closely with you to develop a treatment plan designed to achieve exactly what you want from your makeover.

This treatment plan can consist of numerous cosmetic and functionally restorative procedures, potentially including teeth whitening, composite bonding, veneers, dental crowns, orthodontics (braces), oral maxillofacial surgery and gummy smile reduction.

Aesthetic components for smile makeovers

In addition to the color, alignment and balance of your teeth in the aesthetic zone of your smile (the section of upper and lower teeth that shows when you smile), there are several attributes of your teeth and smile that your cosmetic dentist will evaluate with you when planning your smile makeover. These include:

TOOTH LENGTH

Long teeth give a youthful appearance. Aging produces wear that often results in shorter teeth, and a gummy smile can also make teeth appear shorter. Treatment for shorter teeth can include reshaping and lengthening the two central front teeth with composite bonding or porcelain veneers.

If you have a gummy smile, your cosmetic dentist can provide treatment to modify the gum line and lengthen the appearance of the teeth using laser dentistry procedures. You can also be referred to a periodontist for crown lengthening if necessary.

On the other hand, tooth loosening will excessively lengthen the tooth, and treatment with a gingival graft will restore elegance to the smile.

Tooth lengthening can also have an impact on the overall appearance of your face. For example, long, curved square teeth on a round-faced individual can provide a slimming effect.

THE SMILE LINE

The smile line is an imaginary line that follows the edges of your upper teeth from side to side, which should ideally be the same as the curve of your lower lip when you smile. This standard reference point can be used to help determine the length of your new teeth.

THE PROPORTION OF TEETH

Your cosmetic dentist will examine your teeth to determine whether they are in the right proportion to each other. Most people recognize a pleasing smile as one in which the front two central teeth are dominant and have a width/length ratio of 80%.

This proportion guides the length and width of the other teeth in the aesthetic zone, so that the smile line appears balanced. The famous golden ratio is the basis we use every day to create new smiles.

TOOTH TEXTURE AND CHARACTERIZATION

The technicians we work with are artists who can characterize your crowns or veneers to create a more feminine or masculine appearance, in addition to matching the look and feel of your natural teeth or those you've seen in photographs.

Cost of a smile makeover

The length of treatment and cost of your smile makeover will vary depending on the state of your oral health and the extent of your personalized makeover plan.

Your treatment may be more expensive and take longer if your dentist identifies underlying oral health problems before starting treatment. While these restorative procedures may be partially covered by your dental insurance company, you'll still pay more for treatment than someone with impeccable oral health.

Smile makeover: Maintaining your results

Cosmetic dentistry procedures require regular oral hygiene care and may require maintenance over time. For example, teeth whitening needs to be repeated occasionally to maintain brightness.

Permanent composite bonding may stain and require upgrading or replacement. Dental crowns should generally be replaced after 10 to 15 years. Gingival smile enhancements may also require improvement over time.

Your ceramist, your laboratory technician and the materials chosen by your dentist also have an impact on the longevity of your smile makeover.

For best results, take special care in choosing your cosmetic dentist and learning about your material options.

Your oral health must be assessed before a cosmetic dentist develops a treatment plan for your smile makeover. Your dentist will perform a thorough evaluation of your teeth, gums, underlying supporting bone and occlusion (the way you clench your teeth) to determine the various stages of your smile makeover and their timing.

If your evaluation reveals that you have an oral health problem - such as a misaligned dentition (malocclusion) or gum disease - you'll need to address it first.

Smile Make Over

Cosmetic dentists integrate a variety of dental technologies to show you the changes you can expect to see in your smile. For example, during your oral health assessment for veneers and crowns, your cosmetic dentist can create a wax or digital model of temporary teeth to accurately communicate your procedure requirements to the dental lab technician.

Temporary digital mock-ups also give you a glimpse of the expected result, to make sure you're comfortable with the proposed treatment plan.

Other methods available for previewing your smile makeover include the following:

DENTAL IMAGING SOFTWARE

Imaging technologies provide a snapshot of your results. Your dentist can use imaging technology to communicate the specifications of your procedure to the dental laboratory technician or other dental professional involved in your treatment plan. However, a digital image only gives you an idea of what you might look like when the treatment is complete; it may not entirely match your final results.

BEFORE AND AFTER PHOTOS

Before and after photos of other patients who have had smile makeovers offer examples of the results you can expect to see. Photos can also give you an idea of the quality of the work performed by your cosmetic dentist.

DENTAL STUDY MODELS

Your dentist will take a digital impression of your teeth to visualize an exact 3D model of your teeth. Dentists use study models to show you all aspects of the changes you can expect to see with your makeover. Dental laboratory technicians also use study models as guides for fabricating materials such as crowns or veneers.

Your dentist works with a laboratory that incorporates digital technologies. In such cases, your dentist may be able to use digital scans of your teeth, rather than traditional impressions, to make models of your teeth and smile.

DENTAL COMPOSITE BONDING MODEL

Digital Smile Design. Dental composite bonding can serve as a mock-up of your smile makeover. The dentist can temporarily bond a composite resin material to your teeth so that you can fully visualize the impact of the procedure before treatment begins. In the case of veneers, dental composite bonding allows you to identify how comfortable you are with their look, feel and fit. Adjustments can be made until you are comfortable with the function and appearance of your new smile. Temporary models have no lasting impact on your teeth once they are removed.
