Seeing your child smile broadly is one of the greatest joys for a parent. However, taking care of that smile often raises many questions: At what age should you start brushing their teeth? When should you introduce toothpaste? And most importantly, when should you start taking your child to a dental hygienist?

At the Chêne-Bourg Dental Center, our team of pediatric dentists sees every day that early prevention is the key to long-term oral health. In this article, we explain why, when, and how to introduce your child to professional dental care to ensure they have a healthy smile.

Why do baby teeth deserve our full attention?

It’s tempting to think that baby teeth (or primary teeth) aren’t very important since they’re going to fall out anyway. This is a common misconception that must be dispelled. Proper care of a child’s first set of teeth is essential for their development.

The Crucial Role of Primary Teeth

Baby teeth aren’t just for chewing food or helping children speak their first words clearly. They act as true “space keepers” for the permanent teeth that will eventually come in. If a baby tooth is lost prematurely due to childhood tooth decay, the adjacent teeth may shift. This reduces the space available for the adult tooth, often leading to alignment problems that require complex orthodontic treatment later on.

Preventing the dreaded "baby bottle tooth decay"

The enamel on baby teeth is much thinner and more vulnerable than that on permanent teeth. The bacteria in dental plaque attack this fragile enamel very quickly, especially if the child tends to snack or fall asleep with a bottle containing sugary liquids (juice, milk). Rigorous oral hygiene and professional monitoring can stop this demineralization process before it creates a painful cavity.

At what age should you schedule your child’s first visit to the dental hygienist?

The golden rule in pediatric dentistry is prevention. You should never wait until a child is in pain before taking them to the dentist.

The 2-Year Mark: A Smooth First Meeting

Experts generally recommend scheduling a first checkup with a dentist or dental hygienist around age 2, when the baby teeth have almost all come in.

This first visit is primarily an orientation session. The goal is not to perform a major medical procedure, but to help the child get used to the dental office environment (the chair that goes up and down, the light, the small mirror). Making this first visit a positive and fun experience is the best way to prevent a fear of the dentist later in life.

When should children start practicing good oral hygiene?

What does a dental hygiene appointment for a child involve?

A pediatric dental hygienist’s approach differs greatly from that used with adults. Patience, psychology, and teaching skills are central to the consultation.

Oral examination and gentle scaling

During the appointment, the dental hygienist examines the child’s mouth to check for any buildup of plaque or tartar, or for stains on the enamel. Even for very young children, a light scaling and polishing may be necessary. These procedures are performed using specialized instruments and polishing pastes with pleasant flavors to make the experience comfortable.

Fluoridation to strengthen tooth enamel

To protect your child’s delicate teeth, the dental hygienist often applies a fluoride varnish or gel. Fluoride treatment helps remineralize the enamel and acts as a highly effective shield against cavities. It’s a quick, completely painless, and extremely beneficial procedure.

The School of Brushing: Personalized Education

The hygienist also plays an educational role. By using a plaque disclosing agent (a colored solution that shows where bacteria are hiding), the hygienist shows the child—and the parents—the areas that need more attention.

The dental hygienist will guide you on:

  • Choosing the right toothbrush: A manual or electric toothbrush with very soft bristles.
  • The right amount of toothpaste: It is recommended to use fluoride toothpaste starting at age 2 (once the child knows how to spit it out), using an amount appropriate for their age.
  • The technique: Teach the child the correct movements so that they can gradually become independent by the age of 4 or 5 (always under adult supervision).

Why choose the Chêne-Bourg Dental Center for your child’s dental care?

Located on Chemin de la Gravière, the Chêne-Bourg Dental Center features a pediatric dentistry unit designed exclusively for the well-being of young children.

Specialist pediatric dentists and dental hygienists

Our team of pediatric dentists and dental hygienists has a deep understanding of child psychology. They avoid using any scary medical jargon and take the time to explain every step in a fun way. If a cavity is detected by the hygienist, our team works together to ensure prompt treatment by one of our on-site dentists.

A reassuring environment and solutions for anxiety

From the colorful waiting room equipped with toys to the ceiling-mounted screens showing cartoons during treatment, everything is designed to distract the child and help them relax. For children who are particularly anxious or require longer treatments, our center is equipped to offer conscious sedation using MEOPA (laughing gas). The child remains awake, breathes the gas through a mask placed over their nose, and experiences a deep sense of relaxation, allowing the procedure to be performed with great calm.

Stay one step ahead of cavities

Establishing a strict oral hygiene routine and scheduling regular visits (1–2 times a year) with a dental hygienist is the best gift you can give your child’s health. This ensures the healthy development of their jaws and helps prevent unnecessary pain.

Has your child turned two, or are you unsure about their brushing technique?
